Remember to celebrate milestones as you prepare for the road ahead.
We suck at celebrating.
Life throws lots of challenges and obstacles at us. Whether we are starting a business, launching a creative project, or working within a team, there are days when we are only focused on putting out fires.
There’s always something more to be done, always another meeting to have and hardly ever time to sit back and appreciate how far you have come.
For those of us working in social media it is even more extreme. Social media is all about the moment and instant reaction. A successful piece of content on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram is forgotten in days if not hours.
We, as a society, are much too concerned with the negative. News is always focused on the latest war, natural disaster or scandal. Most of our daily tasks are focused on solving problems and our personal lives are filled with stresses, bills to pay, relationships to maintain, and appearances to keep. We spend hours a day on social media where we are convinced that our lives are not nearly as fun, interesting or successful as of those around us.
This is exactly why we need to take the time to celebrate our successes, no matter how small. Focusing on the positive and successes in our lives is important. Negative thoughts often lead to fear which leads to a narrowing of our thoughts and focus. Not surprisingly, positive emotions and thoughts leads to the opposite, a broadening of the mind and a realization of more possibilities.
But I’m A Realist
I’m not an optimist or a pessimist, I am the perfect crossover between the two… a realist.
The fact of the matter is, I am more often on the side of the pessimists and I just convince myself that it’s more realistic.
Since launching my blog in February of this year, I have focused on one problem or opportunity after another while spending no time taking a breath, looking back, and seeing how far I have come.
I have been caught up in my lack of email subscribers, how few social followers were liking my content or how hard it is to create quality content on a consistent basis.
But let’s look at the positive:
It is almost a year ago to the day that I signed up for Jon Morrow’s Guest Blogging Certification Course and since then I have written for:
Just yesterday I had a piece of content published on Social Media Examiner. A goal I had set for myself when I started this process 9 months ago. Now I have accomplished it, and rather than moving on right away I want to celebrate with you! 🎆Wahoooooo!🎆
Now I have 150 subscribers after starting from nothing and with no previous email marketing experience.
After 9 months I have almost tripled my Twitter following from February.
As I plan for phase two of my blog and website, it has allowed me some perspective. Because after almost 9 months of blogging, I’m still doing it and that fact alone puts me in a small, successful group of people in the industry.
What Are You Celebrating?
I don’t care what it is, maybe you got a promotion, maybe you won the lottery, perhaps your child took his/her first steps, or maybe you finished a school paper.
Whatever it is, don’t jump straight to the next thing on the list, take a breath, pat yourself on the back –heck, go for a special dinner with friends or something – but take the time to celebrate. You can start off by letting me know what you are celebrating in the comments below or via Twitter @CalebCousens and I will celebrate with you!
