Have you ever been afraid?
I’m not talking about from the boogie man or from the latest horror movie to hit the silver screen.
I’m talking about fear of failure, fear of disappointment, fear of man.
I can honestly say that I am often or frequently in fear of things that many of you reading this will laugh at.
I fear what people think about the decisions I make. This is especially a problem when you work in an industry that is little understood by most of the people you know.
As an introvert, many social engagements with friends and even family stress me out before-hand.
But do you know what I have found over 27 years of life? 99% of what I fear never comes to pass, if it ever existed at all.
Not only that, but more often than not, something amazing will come out of the situation that I had previously feared.
You will never be ready to take the risks that life throws at you and you should do it anyway. I have found that the scarier the risk, the greater the reward.
On New Year’s Eve 2013, I decided I would say “yes” more. “Yes” to more social situations, more crazy experiences and more things that I never would have considered before. Over the last 2.5 years with this philosophy in mind, here are just a few of the things that have happened to me.
- Fulfilled a lifelong dream of moving to Europe (I’m Canadian)
- Met and married a wonderful woman
- Learned German to a fluent level
- Founded an online brand
- Met and built relationships with many influencers in my industry who I never would have dreamed of connecting with before
I can safely say none of this would have happened without a determined plan to force myself out of my comfort zone. Of course, there are many times in life where we need to learn to say “no” for the sake of productivity and our own sanity, but that is for another article at another time.
If I hadn’t taken risks in my life, I would never have been working in the online marketing industry and, therefore, wouldn’t have my own brand. I wouldn’t be married and definitely would never have left Vancouver.
You have no idea how boring that sounds! Safe, yes but mind numbingly boring.
Passions, dreams and ideas pop into our heads for a reason. Choosing to follow them will take you on a crazy, scary journey but it will be crazy, awesome too.
Scary doesn’t mean dangerous, please use your head before making a decision.
Staying in the same place and doing the same things will stunt your growth as a person and professional, so get out there, follow your dreams, and say “YES”!
